The personal relationships we have with the people in our life are imperative to build positive mental and emotional health. These important relationships not only include our family and friends but also our work colleagues, neighbors, and other groups that contribute to our identity. There are many relationships we experience throughout our life that hold value, and sometimes these relationships we form can catch us by surprise.

Growing up, most of us were taught that it was important to make friends with the people who were in our school class, or ballet of little league classes for which our parents signed us up. These provided opportunities for us to establish healthy relationships with our peers. Perhaps no one ever suggested it was important to have a relationship with your Insurance Agent. We will file this under things they neglected to teach us in school along with how to establish credit and how to grow your 401k.

Insurance is a financial tool designed to protect your current and future financial assets. In order to provide you with the most comprehensive service, your agent will need to know many details about your life. A great agent is someone who is genuinely concerned and invested in protecting your best interests. When you establish a personal relationship with your agent they are able to determine the proper level of coverage to help protect your family and your assets Establishing a relationship with your Insurance Agent does not have to be hard, you just have to find someone you trust and are otherwse comfortable with. If you do not currently have an Insurance Agent, ask around. Ask your friend if they know and trust their agent. If they do not know their agents name then you need to ask a different friend. You can do a Google search of a local insurance agency and see if they have an office close by so you can go in and meet them in person, get to know them and the agency. You may be asking, "why is it important for me to have a relationship with my insurance agent? I don't even know who my insurance is with!"

Your insurance needs change.

A lot of changes when you first get auto insurance at 16. You may get married, have kids, or buy a home. Those are all important milestones that your Insurance Agent will be able to help you navigate (In terms of insurance of course, we are not licensed therapists). The more your agent gets to know you the more they can help.

For Example: Did you know when you get married that you get a better rate on your insurance? And if you add your spouse and their vehicle to your policy then you will be eligible for a multi-vehicle/multi-driver discount. Did you know that certain carriers offer discounts based on occupation? These are just a few of the reasons it is important to update your Insurance Agent on your bigger life events.

Our life circumstances and the Insurance industry is always changing. Build a relationship with someone who is informed, educated and is up to date with the industry. The person that you chose will probably end up being more than just an Insurance Agent. It is also important to choose an Agency who offers a wide array of insurance services and insurance carriers. Everyone has different insurance needs and those needs can and will change. Having one insurance carrier for your entire life may not be the best route, let your agent asses your current needs and find the best insurance company for you. No one expects you to know everything about insurance, that is why it important to choose an agent you trust to help you out along the way.
