When exactly is a good time for your child to have an email address?

This question may seem quite complicated, but the answer is pretty simple, as soon as they have a name!

There is a sense of urgency to secure our kids digital future, and who knows what the digital future will look like in 10–15 years but securing an email address for your child is not only about reserving an email address, it's about having a secure storage space and time capsule for their memories.

Instead of writing your one year old a birthday card, send them an email. Recap their first year, the highs and the lows, your favorite memories, when they took their first steps, or said their first word.

Email them pictures from their birthday party surrounded by family and friends. These are memories that they will not remember but they will appreciate them when they are older.

It is true what they say, kids say the darndest things, and most of the time we remember what they said in the moment and we forget a few minutes later. Now you can just take out your phone, send them a quick email, and you can read them together in 16 years and laugh. You can give your family and close friends their email address as well so they can send them a birthday message, or a special memory that they always want to remember. Life is fragile, it could be nice to go back and read a special message from a family member who may no longer be with them.

Right now, in the year 2020 there is no better time to start emailing your children. We are living in unprecedented times and our kids will have a firsthand account of our 2020 experience. I am not sure if in the future when they go over the year 2020 if they just skip it… or if they will make it its own course, but whatever happens they can go back and see exactly what is what like for them and their family. For me, I hope my kids will remember the lunch time picnics in the front yard, swimming in the spa in the rain, drive-by birthday parties for our friends and neighbors, Mommy and Daddy home all day, everyday… and they don't remember Mommy running around like a crazy person trying to work a full-time job while managing preschool Zoom class, chasing a one year old all while trying to figure out where to buy toilet paper (I still do not understand this!) and attempt to navigate the grocery store all while wearing a mask.

My emails will tell the full story, but I hope looking back they only remember the good parts.

Now when you give your kids access to their email is a personal decision, but at least you know when the timing is right, they have an email waiting them full of love letters and memories.
